A multifaceted approach was used to study the mechanisms of speciation in the Aedes scutellaris group of species. A genetic evidence is provided in support of the hybrid origin of species. It appears that hybridization has been a potent factor in speciation together with geographical isolation and cytoplasmic differentiation. An East to West migration pattern is suggested.
