The techniques of starch gel electrophoresis have become widely used in studying the genetic biology of a wide number of species. In the following paper, we describe the techniques and materials in use in our laboratory to conduct electrophoresis on mosquitoes of genera Culex, Anopheles and Aedes. A brief survey is included on electrophoretic studies in mosquitoes. Our survey indicates that most of these studies have concentrated on polymorphisms in only 2 proteins and provides a guide for those seeking alternative techniques.
