(BF Eldridge) The suitability of mud as an oviposition substrate for Anopheles albimanus was studied in the laboratory. The authors found that individual females from a colony of this species readily deposited eggs on mud, and in greater numbers than on other media, including water. They also found that the source of the mud (known mosquito habitats vs. garden mud) did not seem to be important. If mud containing eggs was held for 48 h after oviposition, eggs would hatch almost immediately. The authors concluded that An. albimanus eggs show considerable resistance to desiccation.
