Notes

Constitutes the sixth part of Theodor de Bry's Small voyages, printed in 13 parts and an Appendix in Frankfurt am Main and Oppenheim from 1597 to 1633.

This work has been identified as the first issue of the sole Latin edition of part six of the Small voyages by Church.

This part contains a description of the kingdom of Guinea in Africa, the results of observations made in a voyage, undertaken by the Dutch, in the years 1600-1601; together with a history of the early voyages to that coast by the Portuguese, French, and Dutch. The original account, which is the first description of that country in Dutch, was written by Peter de Marees and published at Amsterdam in 1602. It was translated, with changes, into German by Gothardt Artus for the German edition of part VI. which appeared in 1603, and into Latin for this edition. Cf. Church.

Translation of: Beschrijving en historisch verhaal van het Gouden Koninkrijk van Guinea / by Pieter de Marees, first printed Amsterdam, 1602.

There are three issues of the sole Latin edition of part 6. In the first issue, plates II and III are wrongly printed with the plate of the women being printed with the text for the men and vice-versa. The second issue has plates II and III printed with the correct text. The third issue has plates II and III printed with the correct text and plate XXV has been re-engraved to be much darker, with land under the animals on the lower portion of the plate. In all issues plate II has been misnumbered III.
