This item is comprised of an annotated manuscript of Coville's account of the Death Valley Expedition beginning December 24, 1890 in San Bernardino, California and ending September 1, 1891 in Visalia, California. Dated entries describe collecting localities and events, often including information about elevation, and scientific names of specimens collected or observed. Additional localities include the San Bernardino Mountains, the Panamint mountains, Inyo county, Tulare county, Kern county, and the Coso mountain range. The item also includes a letter from Coville to William R. Maxon regarding the manuscript. Coville describes the manuscript as, "being a more detailed than the published itinerary and therefore of possible use to other botanists working hereafter in the Death Valley region."
