Notes
Title from spine label.
Garzoni's signature appears on the plants in plates 6 and 8.
Three blank leaves precede and 3 blank leaves follow leaves of plates.
Fifty watercolors of plants, and a frontispiece portrait of Giovanna Garzoni. The full-page watercolors measure 49.5 × 38 cm. Plates have nos. inked at top right corner of leaves.
Frontispiece is a portrait in red and black chalk within an elaborate frame supported by three putti. On the frame, in capital letters in heavy ink, is written: Giovanna Garzoni. Ascolana Miniatrice. The lower right corner of the frontispiece bears the ownership stamp of the Strozzi family: three crescents addorsed above a regardant eagle with wings expanded, framed within a medallion; the motto "Expecto" appears within the medallion's borders, all surmounted by a princely crown.
Each plant drawing is accompanied by an inscription that identifies the species; on most sheets, the botanical name appears in an unidentified hand at the upper-right corner, and is repeated in the artist's hand at the root of the plant.
