Notes

This volume is a catalog of bird scale specimens collected for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program. The volume does not identify the cruise during which these scales were collected. Fields include [field] number, species, and destination [= type of preparation]. The field numbers, which span from 5401 to 5755, correspond to the field numbers from Southern Island Cruise (SIC) 8, which is recorded in the field book Southern island cruises 1-8, 1963-1965, part 2 : SIC 1-8, in Box 200 Folder 2 of this same collection (SIA RU000245). Species listed for each field number also appear to be the same in both volumes. Dates (11 May to 5 July 1965) and geographic locations in this record are taken from that related item, Southern island cruises 1-8, 1963-1965, part 2 : SIC 1-8. Locations include Howland Island, Tutuila, Tongareva Island [Penrhyn Atoll], and the islands and atolls Hull, Phoenix, Enderbury, Canton, Vostok, Caroline, Starbuck , Malden, Christmas, and Fanning [of the Line Islands], as well as a transect on the Pacific Ocean from 19°40' N, 159°23' W to 2°20' N, 174°53' W. Additional locations include other at-sea positions.
