Notes
This field book is part of a collection of Waldo L. Schmitt papers. Schmitt was a carcinologist. He participated in many field trips and expeditions to observe crustaceans in the USA and around the world. Schmitt's last expedition was in 1962-1963, when he served as a member of the Palmer Peninsula (Antarctica) Survey of the United States Antarctic Research Program. During the survey, Schmitt collected over 29,000 specimens (crustaceans and other animals), which were added to the collections of the National Museum of Natural History. In recognition of his contributions to the United States Antarctic Research Program, the Board of Geographic Names designated a 30 mile ice-covered series of outcrops at the base of the Antarctic Peninsula, Schmitt Mesa. The folder includes photocopies and reprints of station notes with annotated lists of observed specimens from the cruise of the USS Staten Island, as well as 14 printed pages of station notes organized by station numbers and dates, and related to plankton-- tows and to geological collections. It is followed by a separate leaf of geological collections. The last date noted is March 4, 1963.
