The book contains entries from Ferguson's walks and travels throughout Long Island. Ferguson (1861-1930) received a PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University, and specialized in applied chemistry with a particular interest in metallurgy. Late in life, he became interested in botany, particularly the flora of Long Island, about which he wrote several articles for the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club.
