Notes

The notebook documents William Foshag's work at Paricutin Volcano and Mesa de Los Hornitos in Mexico, November 28, 1943 - December 8, 1944. Pages are numbered, and includes sketches, cross sections, diagrams, and news clippings. First notes relate to pahoehoe lava observed at Pedregal and Paricutin Mexico. Includes sketches of lava structure and Zapicho vent of Paricutin. At page 7, Foshag enters dated, narrative style journal entries describing Paricutin. Foshag highlights details by including keywords in the left-hand margin of the entries relating to information like tremors, ash, bombs, odor, vapor, arcs, explosions, and specific flows. Details include appearance of the cone, emanating clouds, the Zapicho vent, terrain and changes to it, work done with colleagues (includes names), daily activities, information about reports, campsites, types of rocks observed, and specimens collected. Some entries include information recorded with distances or time periods. Includes pencil drawings of Paricutin Volcano and a copy of official correspondence in Spanish.
