The correspondence documents Waldo Schmitt's work during the Smithsonian-Bredin Caribbean Expedition, 1958. Letters to Bredin and Alvina Schmitt give descriptions of expedition progress. Letters to Bredin include arrangements of vessel to be used in expedition; identification of specimens; personal details about family; expedition logistics; bats, insect, reptile, amphibian, fish, and shell specimens and descriptions of surrounding environments; and expenses.
