Notes
Correspondence from Henry N. Bolander to John Torrey, dated 1865-1870, discussing a wide range of California flora, from algae to redwoods. Bolander describes his collecting forays throughout the state, including a mountain expedition ("How foolish are rich men, for not staying all summer on those mountains!") with Albert Kellogg which resulted in "quite a game of snow-balling." He shares his excitement over the soon-to-be-completed railroad up Mount Shasta, which will facilitate plant collecting. Bolander also expresses concern over the fate of the Yosemite valley: "Can't you help us to keep that Valley out of private hands?" As with many of his contemporaries, obtaining copies of books and other publications on botany is an ongoing concern. Obsolete plant names mentioned include Castanea chrysophylla, Libocedrus decurrens, Pinus insignis, and Pinus tuberculata.
