Lapérouse sailed from France in 1785 with the frigates Astrolabe and Boussole to the Pacific and west coast of North America. The expedition visited Easter Island, Hawaii, Macao, Formosa, Aleutian Islands, Samoa, Tonga and Australia. After leaving Botany Bay the expedition disappeared, cf.
