Abstract

"Zalobius and Asemobius are redescribed, Nanobius is newly described and their phylogeny and taxonomic position are discussed. One new species, nancyae, is descibed in Zalobius, and serricollis, formerly in Zalobius, is placed in the new genus Nanobius. The four species of the three genera are keyed, described, and illustrated. The current subfamilial assignement of the genera is concluded to be unsatisfactory but the genera share no detected derived characters with other subfamilies that permit reassignment. Cladistic analysis indicates that the two species of Zalobius form the sister group of Asemobius caelatus, that Nanobius serricollis is the sister species of a group containing all three, and that the four species share at least six apomorphic character states. Alternative phylogenetic schemes are discussed. The four species live in the temperate, montane areas of the western United States and Canada"--p. 49.
