The diary (1 of 2) documents Bohumil Shimek's work during a trip to Europe, primarily Austria-Hungary, covering June 12 -July 22, 1914. Entries are dated. The first portion is primarily in Czech; subsequent entries are mostly in English. Entries include lists of personal purchases, contacts and their information, botanical field work with colleagues (Dr. von Degen) on islands of the Danube in Budapest, Hungary; lists of plants observed; terrain seen (sand dunes, salt steppes, loess), photographs taken (numbered with descriptions), observations about local customs and inhabitants; terrain (layers, color, composition, appearance); hand drawn maps; geological sections; shells collected; notes about traveling partners; interactions with local inhabitants; a discussion of local business including breweries; family genealogical notes from local records; and visits to institutes, museums, and gardens.
