The field book documents William Dall's fieldwork in Alaska in 1871-1872 when working for the United States Coast Survey. It lists specimens collected by survey participants including mammals, birds and shells; detailed descriptions of observed specimens with measurements; geological characteristics; and terrain. Includes sketches of terrain, specimens, and geological cross sections. There are various kinds of lists including birds and mollusks of Unalaska and Arctic fauna (with Latin names). The field book documents William Dall's survey work in Alaska during 1871 as part of the United States Coast Survey. Some entries are dated and include information about travel and weather. It mostly contains notes on methods of use and placement of survey equipment for acquiring needed data for survey work and the collected survey data.
