1882-1885: Consists of two journals bound together, chiefly detailing Deane's plant collecting and mounting activities, including notes from lectures by Professor George L. Goodale.

1885-1886: Consists of a journal chiefly detailing Deane's plant collecting and mounting activities, February 23, 1885-November 30, 1886. Also includes two letters from Deane to his wife, dated April 27th and April 29th, 1886.

1887-1890: Journal includes Deane's daily activities and note on plant collecting, April 7, 1887-January 4, 1890, some loose notes on index cards and a letter from George Goodale, dated March 7, 1917.

1890-1895: Journal includes Deane's daily activities and notes on plant collecting, March 30, 1890-January 6, 1895, loose scraps found in the journal and two photographs of Deane on the summit of Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire.

1895-1896: Journal includes Deane's activities and notes on plant collecting, January 7, 1895-December 26, 1896 and some loose notes, probably from 1927.

1896-1899: Journal includes Deane's activities and notes on plant collecting, December 27, 1896-June 1899, as well as one loose sheet detailing a fight between two English sparrows.
