This collection holds diaries by William R McLennan, where he kept detailed records of locations, bird sightings and collecting during his field work conducted for Henry L. White and W. D. MacGillvary, between 1906-1923.

William Rae McLennan was born at Sandford, Victoria on Aug 20, 1882, and died in Casterton 22 September 1935. He was a naturalist with particular interest in Ornithology. Accompanied W.D.K MacGillivray in many scientific expeditions and was employed to explore and collect new species on Cape York Peninsula and around the Cloncurry area. Results published by MacGillivrary in "Emu". H.L. White later employed McLennan to travel the Gulf country where he secured the large venomous snake later named âœOxyuranus maclennaniâ. McLennan enlisted in 1917 and travelled to Europe as a machine gunner. [Source: Obituary. Emu. Vol XXXV 1936. pp 291- 293]
