Notes

Correspondence from George Stuart to John Torrey, dated 1852, assuring Torrey of his willingness to help with the latter's "Flora of the State of New-York"; he goes on to discuss several plants he feels have not been properly described, and the problems of dealing with nurseryman William R. Prince. "He is notorious," he writes, "for sending plants not ordered as substitute for those which are--." Obsolete and illegitimate plant names mentioned include Lilium carolinianum, Lilium tigrinum, and Nardosmia palmata.
