Notes

This is part of a scrapbook from the Smithsonian-Firestone Expedition to Liberia, 1940. Lucile Mann collected news clippings, correspondence, and photographs documenting expedition and press coverage. Photograph subject matter includes: the expedition at camp and preparing to embark to next site; a man making animal cages from palm fiber; local people of Bendaja and Bellyella [Belle Yella]; and girls returning from the Grigri bush. News clippings are mostly from the Washington Post, and cover topics of the expedition dealing with legionary ants; collecting of water olivets, pygmy hippos, and birds; and the Manns' initiation in to a Snake Club, which is discussed in the expedition diary in the collection. Photographs have detailed captions, and in several cases are a variation of photographs found in the expedition photograph album that is part of this collection.
