Handwritten diary in softcover notebook of trip through the Death Valley region of California. The Death Valley Expedition of 1891 was the first in a series of biological surveys by the U. S. Department of Agriculture (Division of Ornithology and Mammalogy), covering parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. Stephens's notes date from 3 February 1891 through 21 Septempber 1891. Localities include Ash Meadows, Benton, Bishop, Casa Diabolo Hot Springs, Independence, Lake Mary, Long Valley, Mesquite Valley, Oasis Valley, Resting Springs, San Bernardino, Table Mountain, Telescope Peak. Includes references to Vernon Bailey, A. K. Fisher, Frederick Funston, Albert Koebele, C. Hart Merriam, Edward W. Nelson, and T. S. Palmer.
