Contents: Vol.1 - No.1-237 (1868-1875) -- Vol.2 - No.238-649 (1875-1972)

Handwritten registers of the gold nuggets found in Victoria in order of the date they were discovered. The register also contains information relating to gross weight; estimated weight of pure gold; specific gravity; carats; proportion of gold, quartz; depth from the surface at which obtained; section of strata to the bed-rock; distance from the nearest quartz reef; and a description of appearance, size, associated minerals, and general remarks. The information supplied varies in its quality, but the place and date of discovery, gross and nett weight, and depth of discovery are always recorded. There is often a general description and some geological information, including distance from the nearest reef. Entries have been annotated in various ways by later registrars. For example, whether a particular nugget has been cast is indicated, as are details of who supplied the model and/or made the cast. Replicas selected for display in the Mines Department (Geological Survey) Museum in 1900 are also marked by circled pencilled numbers coinciding with the display list
