A handwritten memorandum on Smithsonian Institution letterhead, dated June 19, 1939 and signed from A.J. van Rossem to Wetmore ([1] p.) is inserted following Wetmore's preface.

A compilation of notes made by Adriaan J. van Rossem on the type specimens of American birds he examined at various European museum collections during 1933, 1938, and 1939. | The notes are arranged by genus name, in alphabetical order. Locations of collections examined by van Rossem in these notes include: Berlin; Brussels; Cambridge, England; Darmstadt; Dresden; Leiden; London; Munich; and Paris. Information recorded by van Rossem generally includes: city where collection is located; accession number of specimen; measurements of skins and mounts; place where specimen was collected and by whom and when; date examined by van Rossem; and brief description of the condition of the specimen.

Former curator (senior museum zoologist) and lecturer in zoology at the University of California-Los Angeles.
